Interlaken, the paradise for extreme outdoor sports, is situated at the heart of Swiss Alps. As the name implies, the town is between two lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. From there, one can easily choose skydiving, paragliding, zorbing (google it if you don't know what it is), white-water rafting, rock climbing, and of course, skiing and snowboarding. It's a heaven if you have $$$ !

Other than those sports, Interlaken is the transport hub to many Alps destinations, including Jungfraujoch, the highest train station in the world !

Vancouver + Vancouver Island

I am back from the trip; and I've made two life-changing decisions.

One, motorcycle is too dangerous. I rented a motorcycle and had a minor crash. Man, it totally scared the shit out of me. After the incident, I've made up my mind that I won't be buying motorcycles.

Two, Vancouver is such a beautiful and peaceful place. It's very green with trees everywhere. After my graduation in December, I will go back there to look for jobs. Vancouver island is not a bad choice as well.

During my 7 days there (5 full days actually), I saw a black bear, deer, bald eagle, sea lions, seals, sea stars, and crabs. It's a very wild place, and I just scratched the surfaces. Here are the pics:

sorry for the lack of updates. I've been extremely busy for the schools and just done all my exams today. Sigh. And my grandfather passed away a couple months ago...so I wasn't keen on updating my blog.
I am heading to Vancouver and Vancouver island for a week starting tomorrow. When I come back, I will have a lot more time and energy to post once more. CIAO~

Zeppelin (airship) museum, Friedrichshafen, Germany

So far, I am the first and only person I know who go to Germany by BOAT. Pretty cool eh (or maybe not). Anyway, I took a boat from Swizterland to Germany via Lake Constance (Bondensee). Bondensee is surrounded by 3 countries, the other one being Austria.

Zeppelin airship was the future of air travel before airplanes became prominent. Then the disaster of Hindenburg at Lakehurst basically doomed this awesome technology.

Titanic is the sea's most famous disaster. Hindenburg is probably the most infamous air disaster.

Here is the amazing video. Imagine the effect it had 70 years ago.

The disaster probably foreshadowed what's about to come. Hindenburg was the

last president for Germany before Hitler. This airship was the main show in the

1936 Berlin Olympics. Needless to say it's a big part of Nazis propaganda.

London, initial impression

I will begin this post by making a confession: I spent majority of my time working in Britain (come on, you don't really think I can afford to travel 9 months straight, do you?), yet I've only been to London & Edinburgh. (okay, add Glasgow and Liverpool to the list). Britain is just expensive. For the exact same cost, will you rather enjoy 4 days in the Lake District, or 4 Days in Rome or Paris?

London is the first European city for me; I actually 2 weeks there, yet it doesn't leave me as much impression as it should. Maybe the main reason is that I didn't treat it as a travel destination, so I didn't do any research. Or maybe it's the backyard syndrome, I always thought I have plenty of opportunity to revisit. However, I actually went back to London for a weekend in December 2006, and in that weekend I met 2 most famous people I've met in my entire life. (One is Juggler, the other is 璩美鳳). But hey, this post is about my initial impression of London. Lets get to it...

I climbed to the top of St. Paul, a really amazing church. It's almost as big as St. Peter's in Vatican

Photography is forbidden inside St. Paul's Cathedral. The admission is way too expensive ($18 for a church, those English bastards), but it was well worth it. In the basement there lied the tombs of Lord Nelson, Sir Wellington, and memorial of Churchill. When one thinks about it, so many people of significant historic importance are buried here. What will the world look like today if Lord Nelson lost the battle of Trafalgar? What if Wellington lost at Waterloo? (in fact, he almost lost the battle but the Prussians showed up at the last minute to rout the French Army). What if Churchill negotiated peace with Hitler?

The world history can easily be so different had any of the character did something different.

A Real Czech Town - Cesky Krumlov. part 1

Cesky Krumlov, a tiny town compare to Prague (Praha), yet a lot more authentic. Praha, at least the old town, feels like a zoo. During my 9.5 months in Europe, it's probably one of my least favorite places. But of course, that's as always another topic. Here I am gonna talk about the lovely town of Cesky Krumlov.

Yummy breakfast from hostel 99. For the same price in Britain, I can only afford a bag of chips or crisps whatever you want to call it. When I am backpacking, I don't really care what kinda food I have, I mean, I am perfectly happy with fried chicken and fries.

Einstein House & the Swiss capital: Bern

Most people think Switzerland's capital is either Zurich or Geneva. Not true. Its capital is a beautiful small city called Bern. And I have read that it is a lot more fun than both Zurich & Geneva combined. This is the first European city I visited, and I really loved it. (and no, Britain is not part of Europe). The town is tiny, and it's about as big as Ljubljana in Slovenia. But it's filled with charms. I will definitely revisit it in the future.

I've been to quite a few museums, especially last year. London's British Museum, New York's Metropolitan Museum, Munich's Deutsche Museum and lots of smaller ones in Italy and Switzerland. None came close to the quantity and quality of the Louvre. I may prefer Deutche's technological collection, Met's ambience, Uffizi's paintings, and British Museum's admission prices, but Louvre is just...amazing.

The following sections are some Renaissance paintings which I really loved. Photography is forbidden, but one can see people from different cultures trying to take pics thru hidden camera and cell phones. It was really interesting. (click on the pics to enlarge)

Wedding at Cana, where Jesus turned water into wine. This painting is GIGANTIC. Probably two stories tall. It is displayed directly across Mona Lisa. In the painting, Jesus looks spaced out in the centre. Somehow, I felt I was in the party and could hear the following conversation:

Coronation of Napoleon. One of my favorite historic character, it's too bad Napoleon only ruled a dozen years. But his legacy can still be felt today. (look at pissed off cardinals and pope in the background). Napoleon is crowning Josephine in this painting. It was the absolute high point in the emperor's life.

In reality, I only spent a couple of hours in the museum. Yet it was probably the most exhaustive (mentally and physically) three hour of my life. Louvre was huge, and I only visited part of Denon wing (there are 3 wings!). I will definitely go back after a couple years or so. There are only so much art a human mind can take once. All right, that's it...lat...oh wait

PARIS. Awwwwwwwww. Christmas Eve. Part 1

So here it is. One of the definite highlights of my journey.

Paris, the centre of the universe, didn't disappoint me at all. Neither did the French hospitality.

I went in fully expected to be robbed or mugged. In my first night, my only French roommate stole €200 from my wallet, and I was robbed further €20 in a club on the second day.

Amazing. Bravo. You fuckers.

But anyway, I REALLY loved Paris. I think it can be the greatest city on earth if it is inhabited by anyone but the French. :)

This is going to be the first of many (I hope) French posts. The first entry will cover my first impression of Paris, and then I will venture into the greatest museum on earth, the Louvre.

Budget Airlines in Europe

I just came back from Canada last week (guess what, it's COLD !), it was probably the 30th flights since fall 2006. Like most young people, I used to love taking the flights. Nowadays, I just want to get over it asap. As you probably know, budget airlines in Europe is a great way to get around. Most of the budget airlines lack any type of service, but as the name implies, they fly you from point A to point B. I happen to take flights from a few of the airlines, so here is the review from my personal experience.

One of my favorite budget airlines, Air Berlin has friendly staffs, on time schedule, and even complimentary free drinks !!. Air Berlin is based in Germany, and I took the flight from Nuremberg to London. Unfortunately I never have the chance to take it the second time. Air Berlin is not the cheapest, but it has the best quality. Highly recommended.

They claimed to be the biggest budget airlines in Europe. easyJet has many routes among various countries. Simply go to their website and see for yourself. The choice is endless. Sometimes the fare is so cheap that one can't comprehend how the company makes any sort of money. I took easyJet from Ljubljana (Slovenia) to London, and from London to Edinburgh. Flight was delayed an hour each but it was due to bad weather. One downside of easyJet is that if you have to change flights (as my case in London), you will have to wait for the luggage and check it again for the second flight. Oh, and you will have to pay for ANY checked luggage.

But hey, their plane looks pretty good.

They also claimed to be the biggest budget airlines. Ryanair is based in Ireland. They are the definition of a budget airline (and they are also the cheapest and most stringent). Every service cost extra money. For example, check luggage, advance boarding pass and every thing you can think of. What's worst is that Ryanair utilizes GHETTO airport and SHITTY takeoff time (ie 6 AM in the morning or 11 PM at night so that airport fee will be lower). I took Ryanair from Glasgow to Paris, Glasgow to Rome and Rome back to Glasgow. For example, the flight to Rome & Paris departed from Glasgow at 6AM, which means you will have to leave the house at midnight, in the miserable Scottish weather, and take their shuttle bus and sacrifice a good night's sleep. Oh, and don't forget their ghetto airports. Glasgow Prestwick is 90 minutes away from the city. The Paris and Rome airports are two hours away from city centre. Hell, their Vienna airport is actually located in another country in Slovakia! I would not recommended if you have sufficient budget. Ryanair is for poor , young backpackers like me. But hey, their shitty departure time means you have an entire day to explore city once landed!

Rating: 6.0. you get what you paid for, not a cent more.

It's a smaller company located in central Europe. Took it from Edinburgh to Prague. Very typical for a budget airline. But I do like their services.

Based in central Europe, Sky Europe is a small, yet fast growing airline. I took it from Krakow to Venice. Again, like Jet2, it is a typical budget airline. However I really like their service and their plane & logo looks good.

It's a Scottish low cost airline. What makes it special is that it is based in Scotland. Anyway, it has transatlantic flights to NYC, Toronto and even Vancouver (amazing for such small company). I took it from Liverpool to JFK in New York. The flight itself is fine. But when we landed in JFK, the plane was stranded in the middle of the lot (we didnt have any boarding gate, or even buses to pick us up). We were stranded in the plane for twenty minutes. Oh well, at least it only cost less than $400 to fly from England to America!

Rating: 7.5

Doesn't belong to the budget airlines. BA, if you haven't heard, is the worst airlines on the planet in losing the luggage. It is baffling that such a big company has such notorious efficiency. But I am not all that surprised after spending some time in Britain. One of my Taiwanese friend had his luggage lost by BA. He was taking the flights from Taiwan to UK. Guess where they found the luggage after 6 month?

The luggage was found in United States of America. Amazing how the luggage can get so lost.

Anyway, I took BA from London to Geneva, and from Paris to Edinburgh. Thankfully they didn't lose my luggage.

Rating: 8.0 (if they don't lose your luggage)

Rating: -9.85 (if they lose your luggage, chances are you won't ever see it again)

Eagle's Nest / Kehlsteinhaus (Hitler's headquarter in the Bavarian Alps)

"The Kehlsteinhaus also known as the Eagle's Nest, is a chalet-style building which when built was an extension of the Obersalzberg complex built by the Nazis in the German Alps near Berchtesgaden. The Kehlsteinhaus was an official 50th birthday present for Adolf Hitler. Nicknamed Eagle's Nest by a French diplomat, it was meant to be a retreat for Hitler and a place for him to entertain visiting dignitaries."

Ever since watching Band of Brothers, I really really wanted to visit Eagle's Nest. For some reason, I didn't book any accomodation in Berchtesgaden at all. It's a resort town in the German Alps and all the hotels are quite pricey (to me anyway >.<); to make matters worse, I was there during Oktoberfest, Munich and nearby regions all ran out of rooms. Anyway, instead of staying in Berchtesgaden and bankrupting myself , I hopped across the border and stayed in Salzburg, Austria. This was one of those things that made the trip memorable. I never planned visiting Austria, and I happened to be there during a world cycle race. that, of course, is another story, back to topic. I went on this WWII tour in the region, where we visited all those Nazis high command's old residences. Back in the old days, this was the second capital of the Third Reich, after Berlin. It was there where they planned the attacks to various nations. Of course, the tour stopped by what was used to be Hitler's residence, Berghof. The opulent house was completely destroyed by the Allies after the war, and dense trees were planted to cover any trace of the place. And then we visited the underground tunnels. These were not just bomb shelters. These tunnels have everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. Bunk beds, hospitals, machine gun turrets, power generator, communication headquarters, and ammo/food storage spaces. What is even more amazing that the gigantic scope is that people are still discovering hidden tunnels now. At the end, we went to the top of Eagle's nest. The view was magnificent where one can see Bavaria on one side and Salzburg, Austria on the other side. Hitler was born in Austria, this place must be very special for him. Overall the tour is err, dry. The guide was reciting information. I bet a tape recorder does a better job than her recitation. But I guess it's still worth it. On a side note, the WWII walking tour in Munich is infinitely better.

...and also one of my FAVORITE cities in Europe (apparently one of two interests Hitler and I shared, the other being lusting over a map and wondering where I want to invade next!).

The old town is magnificent and historic. Nuremberg existed way before Columbus's great-great-great grandparents learned how to become pirates!

Contrary to popular beliefs, German (at least Bayerns, or Bavarians) are very friendly toward foreigners. In fact, Germans/Swiss are the friendliest people I met in Europe. Don't believe the myth that these are racist pigs. Their country & grandparents paid tremendous price for their mistakes. So the next time when you head over there, expect to meet lots of friendly people who speak better English than I did.

Monterey Whale watching & Aquarium

So, me & my girl Mavis went to Monterey, California as our last stop of our 10 day road-trip. It was world-renowned for its aquatic life. Monterey's fisherman's wharf is infinitely better than the tourist-trapping San Francisco counterpart. There were sea lions, seals and so many birds right inside the harbor. Anyway, the previous days were the huge storm in the west coast where 1 million residents in Bay Area lost power and where the Sierra Nevada had 6 feet snow dump.

We went on to this whale watching trip. The weather was somewhat better, but the tides were still huge. It was like riding a sea roller-coaster ride for 3 hours straight. And I even got seasick where I wanted to puke to the captain's face (LOL). Anyway, we saw some gray whales. I wished I could say it was a magical experience, but the shitty tides ruined the atmosphere.

Afterward, we went to the Aquarium. The student ticket cost a whopping $22, but it was worth every penny. It was by far the best aquarium I have been to in my life. Here are some pictures & videos.

Basically, that's where I have been to since moving to Canada...However I went to majority of the places in the past year & half. It's pretty cool to live in the West Coast (twice), East Coast, and Britain. Right now I am studying in sunny Califoooonia , and yap, life is great!
